Hi

New on here and some help needed. We have an 06 cooper and yesterday noticed it left 2 dampp patches on the drive. They did not dry up in the sun and when I wiped my finger over it it had the feel of steering fluid. The power steering feels fine but the pump whines quite loud.

Also the coolant expansion bottle was empty, so topped this up but has not drooped level in 24 hours.

Any ideas pleas ?

Ps First BMW mini we have owned and the current wife loves it, red, white roof mirrors etc and chrome pack mmmmmmmmmm.

have you checked the power steering bottle?? If its dropping I would get it sorted quick as will cause lots of damage if it runs dry. The coolant would be a concern also but try and see if you can see where it is going. Hopefully just an external leak. Take the oil fillter cap off and check that isnt a a creme colour.

Thanks Dave

no mayonaise seen and dip stick oil looks good as well, checked steering fluid and that is fine so is the brake fluid. Moved the mini this morning and whatever the fluid is started to drip again so it only happens whilst the engine is running
.

At first I thought it was the condensation from the air con but it does not dry up in the sun !!!

So Monday I am going to book it in to the dealer to be on the safe side

My coolant tends to disapear soon after a service from BMW. After a top up its fine until the next service.
I guess there is an air lock in the system or something.
Just keep an eye on it.

I had a leak from my power steering pump in 2006. It made a nice mess on the underside of the car. It only started making a puddle on the driveway when the pump had almost had it. Fortunately (or not) I had an accident and it was replaced through my insurance. They told me at the time it cost £500 to replace.

The Mini coolant system is a pig to get all the air out though..... especially the heating matrix. Took us an hour when I rebuilt my engine

HI an update it is definatley coolant as today I noticed the level had dropped. It only leaks when you start up which I find strange. Anyway, I am going to book it in for a check, what is BMW like with warranty work ? I hope they are more honourable than ford !! Also going to get them to check the power steering pump as it whines like a banshee. Not a good introduction to BMW so far !!!

They should be fine with the warranty work, never heard of them refusing to do it.

The whine is normal I'm afraid. But get them to check it anyway just in case it is abnormally loud.

Sadly you can thank Rover for most of its design.....so there is plenty of "features" lol. But you do have the BMW tweaked model of 2004 onwards so your power steering should be much quieter than before 2004. Now they screamed all the time and the easiest way to know one is near by. Mines much quieter than when I had an 02 reg.

Thanks everyone for your advice. It has been fixed.

A brilliant service from mini assist. Called them told them the problem and within 1 hour a man in a big BMW turned up at my wifes place of work and fitted a new thermostat. Hopefully problem solved, if not he said he would be straight back.

I am very impressed and pleased a bought it from a dealer.

Brilliant, good old MINI assist!

Glad you got it sorted, did he say anything about the power steering?
