All

I am changing my wheels, and am going to take this as an opportunity to ditch my runflats.  It costs me £140 a corner each time I get a flat,  they can't be reparired etc etc....

I have a standard spec unmodified MCS and am looking for a tyre that won't break the bank but will give me better ride than the runflats.  The new wheels are 17".

Any of you lovely people got any recommendations - make, cost etc?  If I have missed any critical info that you need to recommend, let me know!

Phil

I had Avon zz3 on my last S and they were really good in all weathers and gave me loads more grip.
You can get them for around £70 each maybe cheaper .

Thanks Jo - found them for about £92 a corner at the mo...

I seem to remember a past thread saying good things about Nankangs (Dave?).

I have found 205/45 R17 84V for just about £60 a corner fitted. I do less that 6k miles a year and no track days - anyone have an opinion on these or know if I can get them cheaper?

Also recall someone saying Toyos were pretty good?

I perosanlly have had toyo proxies t1r's since the summer after much deliberation - i have had no quibbles with them & think there fab, even in the snow!! they were expensive but well worth the money. Depends on your budget!!

I perosnally used - http://www.tyretraders.com/TyreSearch/ & they were fantastic

There also blackcircles, Verdestein tyre, tyre shopper cant comment on service but worth a look

Good luck

As said in the pm Phil i am on Yokohama Parada Spec 2's but the other choice was the TR1's. The Toyo's are slightly cheaper but its a few pounds so minimal.

Cant say i have heard good stuff about Nankangs - Avon appear to be better.

I bought mine (and always buy tyres from Pro Tyre - there are a few around and they have a website). I trust them with the wheels and they are more likely to negotiate than larger chains if you get a price elsewhere.

Kwik Fit were doing a deal if you buy four tyres on Continental and Michelin i think, but i am not sure if it is still on - the prices were very good.

Went on TyreTraders as suggested and can bet the Toyo Proxes at £78.78 a corner fitted inc VAT:

TOYO 205/45R17.88W PXT1-R REINFORCED

They also have the Nankangs at £60.32 a corner fitted inc VAT:

NANKANG 205/45R17.84V NS2

And there are also Avons at £82.23 a corner fitted inc VAT:

AVON 205/45R17 88W ZZ3 RF

Thoughts???

I remember Max saying he liked the Nankangs but a friend of mine at work had them on his Golf and they didn't last very long (around 6-8 months).

They might be great for the odd trackday but not so good for everyday use.

Thats just my opinion, but then I've never used them myself.

Just checked the "Tyre recommendation thread" and found my above comment to be untrue.

http://www.scnm.co.uk/forum-t11102.html

page 11 seems to be about the Nankangs

Cheers Matt.

Have to day the Toyo Proxes are winning.

What a difference in price - I checked Blackcircles and they cam in at £379.84 fitted.

TyreTraders for the same tyre:  £315.10 fittedcheesey.png

Pays to ask your clubmates for advice - thanks for the heads up Dawnwink.png

I cant give you a good answer as its all personal preference and the way you drive that should base your decision.

Nankangs are a summer dry tyres just like Paradas so in the wet its a bit more slippery than the Avons or Toyos. They are easily the most controllable tyres I have ever driven and you can sit on the limit sliding the car around the corners with ease. No sudden break of grip. In the dry they are just glued to the tarmac but that was 215/40s R17 NS2's. Due to them being a tyre-R compound they go off after less than a hundred heat cycles and then wear factor decreases massively. Even doing 2 track days and 20K miles my old set were half worn. These are only £46inc VAT but do remember you get what you pay for so arent such an all rounder like the Avons. http://www.topgear.co.uk/acatalog/Special_Offers.php

Toyo's are good in both the dry and wet but are more unpredicatable on the edge. Will be a big leap up from the runflats though

Avons ZZ3s, useto love these tyres and are still a great compound in all conditions. You could be able to get a good deal on them somewhere

Currently im running Vredesteins at the moment and even in 205/45s they are just soooooo grippy in all conditions These have to be my favourite tyres so far and are available from Dave @ ThinkMini. Not sure on costs at the moment!

P.s. Avons in a bit wider for £316 fitted http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=2154017AV1Y

Forgot to say too, Runflats can be repaired like any other tyre! And dont forget to add the cost of fitting to internet searching...

Thanks Dave, Rob and everyone else for your input and suggestions.

Its down to the Toyos v the Avons I think. There isn't much in the price and the best I found was:

TOYO 205/45R17.88W PXT1-R REINFORCED- £78.78 a corner fitted inc VAT

AVON 205/45R17 88W ZZ3 RF - £82.23 a corner fitted inc VAT

Both with TyreTraders.

If anyone can find them cheaper around Alton/North Hants then let me know!
