Why is exhaust popping good? (apart from the obvious!)

Hi peoplebiglaugh.png

Was chatting to some people at work the other day who had heard my mini popping and burbling. I explained to them that some cars do this and that it is generally associated with more tuned cars but it got me thinking:

I know that it is caused by fuel being dumped into the exhaust and this helps eliminate lagging in turbo cars due to the explosion helping prolong the spinning of the turbo. I have heard that BMW designed this into the Cooper S especially and that some pop more than others. Apart from making the Mini sound meaner, what is the purpose of this in a non-turbo car? Does it aid performance in anyway?

not true, you dont have to have a turbo car for that!

the popping sound is due to the "too" rich mixture.

it means you are dumping to much fuel, and the car needs to be leaned out a little bit!

It was introduced on facelift MINIs. I think they might have been using it to cool cylinder temps a bit as a tiny bit of fuel makes a huge difference. But you can make it pop on closed loop fuelling so must be injecting fuel on lift off.

On facelift MINI's they added the popping to make it sound a bit like a classic tuned mini, and as dave said it will also help with the cylinder temps.

If you want to hear a MINI with too much popping you sould hear my MINI. Now I'm running GTT manifold and decat the pops are very noisy.

Yeah i've heard yours go past a few times in Bournemouth recently. Thought it sounded different both on and off the gas and wondered if you had had a new manifold fitted. Mine for some reason has always popped and banged alot, like yours. But now yours possitively crackles!. Sounds greatcheesey.png

Main thing is to do a number of cars on the same day to get comparison print outs - most of them are not THAT accurate.

The last two I had done on the MINI they failed to take my car to the rev limit (7,500rpm) cause they think the limit is same as others (5,500) mad.png

I took my Porsche to Ray West Tuning (Thruxton) last year for a Rolling Road Remap amazed.png his rollers are quite accurate.  Was an expensive outing but the Porsche drives really well as a result.

dodgy operator maybe?? they should be taking it to the rev limiter which is between 6,750 and 7250 depending on what version of the MCS people have.

Better to just compare torque and hp to someone else at a few set points on the graph. Peak is just that.... the peak

Charlie is the Master LOL
I don't know how he does it, but he knows who has done your mapping etc and will evan know if it can take more depending on your turbo ( that applies to us Scoobie owners ).
He's very well respected amongst the more powerful performance car owners, he readings are spot on accurate and I wouldn't take a car anywhere else to be honest
He's the only person I've seen do a dyno run who has his eyes shut in concentration listening to the engine.

My S will be going there when its nicley run in with a few added mods

Odd. My Feb 03 car always popped, evne when standard. Doesnt any more since bigger injectors and AFPR though. Well, it does, but not so often and its usually on track.
