That if your tyres are as much as 6psi down, your fuel consumption will go up by as much as 10%, and tyre wear can increase by up to 30%??? And that is aside from any handling issues.

I know that I have found garage pumps to be woefully poorly calibrated. This week in Auto Express they did a review of gauges and the Michelin Digital Gauge 12276 came way out on top! I just ordered one from speeding.co.uk:

Whats the worst thing is that the garage gauges arent too bad its that people seem to pump their tyres up when they are hot after driving to the petrol station and wonder when they check them again later cold why they are so low. A cold day compared to a hot day makes a big difference too...

Agreed. Not really sure why people use them as a 'check up' on motorways when you have just been doing 70! Mind you - 18-20 degrees today - may try out my new toy if it arrives and check those pressures!

Now if you want to make some money you could design one that lets out a small amount of air and takes the air temp and applies a correction factor against the pressure based on the temp. Check your tyres at any temp and get right every time
