Hi People,

A quick question, i was wondering how i would make my R56 Cooper s with a standard exhaust backfire/pop/bang when i change gear and or accelerate and let off the throttle.

Is it possible to remove the cat on the standard exhaust even if its not legal?

ANy and all ideas well appreciated. After being at top gear this year i heard so many exhaust just pop and bang when they were being revved specially when the cars were just crawlling along in first gear.

Thanks
James

GT Tuning do a modification the the standard manifold - removing one of the two cats leaving it road legal but better flowing. Not sure if that would do it.

You need the fueling to do it so might be able to be incorporated into a remap. Might not pass your MOT though!

TBH Not to bothered about the MOT because its a brand new car it doesnt need one for 3 years and by that time i might no even have the car. I was just wondering because the jCW cars seem to backfire alot and i was hoping i might just be able to take one or both of the cats from the exhaust or something. Also just wondering how cars do make the noise/effect.

the R56 seems to do it when changing from first to second following spirited acceleration (not talking mad here, just with the revs' up) mine always seems to do it then.

With the supercharged MINI's the popping was something BMW made the MINI's do. As Dave said it will be unburnt fuel hitting the pipe. For some strange reason my MINI has always been really good at this.

Yeah it was added noticably to the facelift MCS or if you remaps a pre facelift with MTH as I found.

Yours is probably just overly rich like mine is.....

Ok so i have got my R56 already remapped (236bhp) and i do notice a small popping on stationary revving and "spirited" driving and changing gear from 1st to 2nd. But i guess there is no easy way to make it backfire pritty much everytime i drive fast and let of the throttle. I was hoping that if i took out a cat or changed something small i could get a sweeet sound. I guess i will have to get a new exhuast. Anyone recommend a good exhaust that will sound sudate under normal driving but loud popping and banging when hitting it hard. Thanks

drop the pre cats and you'll probably see a nice increase in sound/note

Not sure if a new exhaust will give you more popping and banging as you need unburnt fuel going into the pipe/manifold. You will as dave said get a better sound/note without the pre cats.

And legally they are only required for first registration and after that they are fair game Just need to keep the cat if you want to keep the emissions but if you dont than get a new manifold and downpipe from Milltek and see how it sounds then!
