Growing tired of MINI breaking

Almost at the stage where I hate my new car now. It is in mint condition looks wise and only done 17k Miles yet its causing me so much trouble that I'm on the verge of giving it back.

It's been a month now and I only got it back today yet it seems BMW havent really fixed it right.

First of all it started with the LSD being noisey, so they changed the fluid.

The gearbos of cluth makes this wierd noise like a wooned chair being dragged over a hard surface for a second when pulling away in first.

To begin with it did it occasionally when cold, now it does it an awful lot more no matter what temp.

BMW rekon I'm making this up because it only did it on their tests once apaprently.

I know for a fact Adrain had this. How about anybody else?

If it doesnt go well then I might change the car for an R56 since I can't find another S with this spec at a decent price... I know some of you have said they handle badly compared to R53 and LSD but I loved the S they lent me for a week so really thinking hard about it right now.

New Banner coming soon!

If Lee is down at Poole quay then get him to have a look. He might just be able to help point BMW in the right direction

The noise you are hearing when pulling away sounds like the clutch, mine did it until I replaced it.

My mini is making a weird noise when in gear either accelerating or coasting on the engine. When i engage the clutch the sound goes. I believe it is the output shaft bearing. Mind you i have an early 51 plate cooper, and it seems this midland gearbox has a few common problems. Has anyone on this forum had a similar experience? I really need my car this week as well! My mini experience has been bloody expensive lately. Seriously thinking of upgrading to a more modern cooper.

Its not quite a rattle, its kinda hard to describe. Its subtle, and most prominent when coasting on the engine. It sounds deep and speeds up in frequency depending on speed. Very subtle though

I recently had problem with LSD - rubbing noise on full lock, slow speed - BMW knew of problem, changed fluid specification and it's great now but I hope nothing else develops !!!!!!

Dont think of it as a problem, its like that on every MINI with an LSD and took them 6 months to find the correct oil. It just depends if the customer excepts the noise or gets it sorted or not.

The sound I am talking about has nothing to do with the steering. Its a gearbox issue, i think its the bearing on the output shaft. Phoned up BMW for some ideas of prices, reckoning 1200 quid for labour alone!! God i hate my mini right now!

Wow! There is no way it would cost that anywhere else! There's people doing clutchs for 1/3 of that so add 2 hours extra labour.

Yeh, I am certainly not going down the bmw route!! I'll try and tackle it myself otherwise. I dont know what their hourly wage rates are, but its ridiculous. Anyways no one on here seems to have come across a similar problem then?

Well the problem is as expected, a gearbox one. I have had to have all my gearbox's bearings replaced and even a couple of gears as some had some serious wear. My clutch plates and bearings have also been seen to, so this MINI should be running just fine when i pick her up tomorrow. The gearbox specialist said he has rebuilt a few MINI gearboxes on the earlier models due to a design fault. Not sure what year this stops! I am wondering whether the cooper s has this problem as it should be a different gearbox altogether as it has a 6 speed. Does anyone know? A good reason to settle for a cooper s then hah!!

My mini is on a 06 plate it started to make a noise from the gearbox area at idle out of gear bmw changed the oil and this cured it for a few days but then it started it again it was quite loud as you could hear it a good few yards away .
I was told they all make a noise (bmw sent area manager to look at it)  and i sat in another which made a noise but not as loud  they replaced the gearbox under warranty and it's been fine since .
And yes it the clutch can make a rattle sound when pulling away but depends entirely on revs and how you feed the clutch in  sometimes it rattles sometimes it doesnt'
