Just to let everyone know my MINI went in today to have the clutch looked at due to it making a squeeking noise when pushing the pedal down and up once the car was warmed up.

Just got a call back from BMW and they are telling me it will need a new clutch and maybe a new flywheel. They advised they will talk to the warranty claim department tomorrow morning to see if they can do it FOC for me. However they might not be able to since they are a wear item. Now I have only done 50,000 miles so should the clutch really have gone now and should I be expected to pay for it?
On a plus note BMW have found a problem with my steering colum and that will be replaced tomorrow since they are keeping my MINI over night.

All I need now is for the MINI to fail the MOT in the next few weeks.

50,000 sounds ok if it's had a hard life.as you do track days etc and have extra torque etc sounds about right.

and the steering colum is a common problem.our mini one had it replaced with only 27000 on the clock.it must be a design flaw as this should last the life of a car

The steering column is a classic one where the bearing has just dried out and use of a thick oil usually sorts it for a 6 months or so.

Did they say what the clutch problem actually was? If its clutch squeal then you will have to pay for it im sure as often it is caused by cooking the clutch but its the release bearing then this is a known fault. Hopefully it will be sorted under warranty but its a grey area but I would reinforce the fact that the bearings are not a friction part so should be covered by the warranty.

Your clutch has had a hard life though with MINI Runs, GTT kit and many track sessions.

I was hoping the noise I got when pressing the clutch pedal would not mean a new clutch as it drives fine and the pedal travel is no different to what i have had all year. Guess i will just have to wait a see what they say tomorrow. If they do try to charge me for it I might push and see if I can get away with just paying the part costs and not for the labour. Or I go to GTT and get them to put a upgraded clutch in.

Clutch is not slipping and drives just fine.

When I first started getting the sound I thought it would be something that needed lubrication on the pedal area. The sound only happens about halfway through the pedal movement up or down and gets a little stiff at the same time. So a release bearing could be a problem by the sounds of it. Once the pedal is fully down or up it sounds like it always did. When BMW call me tomorrow I will go into more detail with them and ask why they fix the clutch needs replacing. Might be a case of open up the gearbox and if the cluctch really has gone then fair enough. If not and it is just a bearing somewhere then they pay.

I appreciate I have got an estimated 220bhp and a few tracks day done so I can't complain too much. I just thought if the clutch had gone I would really have noticed a difference to the way it drives.

I could and have been doing that for about 4 months. Just thought with the warranty about to expire on Jan 14th 2008 I would get it looked while it was also in for the steering column.

Oh I know what a racing clutch is like!  Hoang has a MX5 with a twin clutch and that is fun to drive in traffic.   have to give it about 3000 revs and try and feed it as best you can.  lol

I've had my clutch replaced under warranty, due to the release bearing being faulty. This is a known fault.

Right BMW said they don't know what the problem is until they get a look at the clutch area. Now becuase it is a wear and tear item they will only cover the labour and parts under warranty if they find something broken like say the release bearing. If it is just a warn clutch I will have to pay for the work and replacement clutch. This will come to about £1180 inc labour and vat.

I have told them to go ahead with the work as I really thing something is wrong woth the release bearing and not the clutch. At least this way i have a chance I don't have to pay.

Bad news is I don't have my MINI now until the latest next Wednesday. Also don't have a hire car as they don't have any available till early Jan. Not too worrid as I can walk to work and get my brother to pick me up after.

Can cycle but that means doing it to and from work. With walking I can get picked up at night so I don't freeze trying to cycle home around 10pm.

I've done 103,000 miles, have more bhp than John and probably done more track days, so where's the logic?

It's just one of those things unfortunately.

Car clutch is similar to a boat water pump (cold water to taps).  Some have to be replaced after a year, others last for 15.

Still it's worth pressing BMW for a goodwill payment.

Ask them:  "Is the MINI designed to fail at 50,000 miles?"

If they say no, then they should be liable to fix it for free?

Also depends on the type of traffic you drive in I know my clutch will fail faster than anyone that lives in the countryside. Good old city of lights traffic for you.........
