Dave,
i used to be in the VAG world, and for the VAG cars you can get some software called VAGCOM which is a complete diagnostics and measuring system for a laptop. Far more advanced than dealers have. Ever so usefull....my question is, (as you mention your laptop) is there anything similar for the MINI?

The Vagcom guys were working on a similar application for the MINI but they gave up development so far as I know. Probably due to lack of possible income.

The similar kind of thing for BMWs/MINIs is probably either the BMW GT1 or BMW Carsoft. I'm currently working on getting Ediabas to work correctly....this is what the factory use and is far more advanced that what dealers have.

My objectives are to be able to set options on the Body ECU and to be able to control all other ECUs and do mapping.

All good fun playing....

A good OBD interface and code reader is always useful though for reseting ECU fault codes and live data reading.

if the light is on, none of the airbags are working; the system is shut down.

Reset my airbag Error code tonight. Recorded as seat sensor below resistance and not a reoccuring fault.

I live in Poole. i had a look at the cables under the drivers seat, and they have been cut and reconnected by bmw at some point as they have used shrink connectors.

It might well be a different fault completely. The error code/description will explain all...

yeah he is right, it could be anything. i dont think BMW would have spliced the wires, they would have almost certainly replaced the loom.
90% chance its a seat loom though, and a reset should sort it out.

The airbag warning light fault on MINI is very common. There is a (Quote BMW) "Product Enhancement" for this problem.

In simple terms the wiring/connector to the seat ocupancy mat suffers with high resistance. the result of this is a warning light on.

BMW's fix is a replacement wiring harness that has to be crimped and heatshrunk under the seat.

It is often the case that this repair is not done correctly and your back at the original fault.

Anyone who wants this job doing correctly feel free to give me a shout.

I can also put the light out for you!

The effect of an airbag light being on with regards to operation is very subjective! If the fault does not relate to a crash sensor then the airbags that are NOT defective will still detonate in an accident. If for example the passenger seat occupancy mat is faulty the system will detonate the passenger airbag regardless of occupancy or not. If the side airbag itself stores/logs a fault then the MRS system well deactivate it.

Hope that helps guys/girls.
