The PAS is feeling quite heavy all of a sudden and a bit of research shows that it is a relatively common problem requiring a new pump.

The car is out of warranty and has done 117,000 miles, so a goodwilll claim would be pushing my luck.

Does anyone have a recommendation that it less expensive than Woods?

Mini Matt for parts or maybe a scrap yard....

Check your oil level is on the MAX mark and tyres are pumped up too

Well, after not doing anything about the steering for a few days, the car was left in a car park for an hour and the battery was flattened - a bit of a strange whirring noise from under the bonnet, though.  A quick jump-start and a drive to Wood in Salisbury (the car park was in Salisbury) confirmed that the PS pump was indeed faulty and was running all the time, hence the whirring sound and flat battery!

It appears this a known problem, as the service department diagnosed it without looking at the car!

Anyway, total cost was a mere £513.76, which included an exchange pump, 2 hose clips and the PAS fluid, plus a 2 year parts warranty.

I'm prepared to forgive Mini as this is the first fault in 117k and I have used the steering in that time.

Ouch!

Mind you, if it's your first fault in 117k I suppose it becomes a little more relative. At least you have peace of mind now knowing it's got a 2 year warranty too.

Good to hear you are all sorted. 117k with no problems must be a record!
