Right, after a very busy few days I've finally got a chance to sit down and reflect on yesterdays fun.

Firstly thanks to max and motorsport events team for a great day at Abingdon. Was a very different track to RAF Marham and wasn't all about BHP.

Morning session was very wet but fun and played on my MINI's strength. The LSD. Unknow to Max and Hobzy I had also got my MINI upto GTT 220 spec the previous Monday to help me keep up on the straights.

Afternoon session the track got dry and ment Hobzy could switch to his cut slicks. With these on and the many other things he has done to his MINI I think he is the best out on the track.
I'm getting quicker now with the extra BHP and braces but still need some really good rubber. It didn't help that I couldn't change to my track tyres at lunch time due to technical issue. This ment I had to look after my normal road tyres meaning I couldn't carry as much speed through the corners. :x Lucky for me it was an antclockwise track so I got even wear in my tyres having done previous tracks clockwise.

My brother also came along with me and enjoyed driving my MINI. He now understands why I like my MINI so much and keep adding mods to her.

Have around 50min of video to edit down and will post up asap.

Thanks Matt for coming and taking the pics. I'm going to order some of my car and let my brother have the pic of him driving the MINI.

It was great meeting you guys and the day was a hoot. The track is for sure the best place to spin or have your brakes fail.

Cant believe that those front pads didnt last from 2nd week of Jan until now. I think I need a BBK for future track events.

I am so glad Hobzy managed to get past that damn SRT8 Jeep. Simon was speaking to him and he was told thats its 450bhp and has stiffened susspension.

Anyway , I am sure I will see some of you guys again at future track events. Next time I am bringing my entire tool kit, copper grease and spare brake pads!

Just to clarify a few points on this Abingdon circuit viz other events that we have attended...

This Abingdon circuit was "slow" in comparison with say Marham, Bedford Autodrome or any of the big 5 - where maximum speeds on the straights can be 130mph+

The event was cruelly limited to a maximum of about 90mph in one area only due to the embankment on the outer edge of about a third of the circuit (to the NW) effected by a number of chicanes designed to slow us down so in the event of a spin off the chances of contacting with the bank were much reduced.

So in pure bhp terms this would have been a disappointment for the big bhp cars + those who can't drive the twisties

But I for one learned much at this event (thanks to one of 4 instructors - Rupert) who showed me how to do chicanes in 4th gear and 50 mph.

Finally I would like to thank you all for not mentioning that I "collected" a little cone on the left hander at the end of the long straight

This due to not paying attention to what I was told by my instructor "You can do this corner at 60 in 3rd gear if you dont brake from 90"

YR

Actually he was right I did it later at 60 as did Tom

I managed to just hit 100mph in the dry. If I left my braking later I could have got more but didn't fancy having brakes fail and crashing.

How do the F1's compare to the tyres you have tried before, or is it to early to tell yet.

Andrew the G-S D 3s (Eagle F-1) are great all rounders for both road and track but I find them a bit expensive for track use @ about £85 a corner.

Better buy for road and track are the TOYO T1-Rs at abot £75 ea.

Have to say that my Nankang NS on 18" wheels have been really superb on wet track and wet road at £56 a corner (£46 for 16" version).

Not sure how long lasting they might be in the summer (only been on my car for 2 weeks) but if they last a year (an/or 3 track days) they will have been well worth it

In order of superiority:

G-S D3s (most expensive)

TOYO T1-R (middling)

Nankangs (least expensive but yet to be proven as a long term practical proposition in the dry)

But hey you could just get the TOYO-888s at £130 ea for the track or Dunlop Runflats similar price for the road

Now call me biased (I have one set new G-S D3s; a used set of TOYO T1-Rs: both 16s and a set of 18" Nankangs )

Spread-betting I think its called in the trade

The reason i ask is that i'm rather new to the world of normal high performance tyres.

Since September 2003 i've been on runflats, Pirelli Eufori on my first MINI, and Dunlop SP 9000 DSST on my current MINI, until 3 weeks ago, when i got my new O.Z Racing ultraleggera's.

The tyres that came with these are Accelera Alpha's, in the stock 17" MINI size of 205/45/17. Not a make i had heard of before. Though when you deducted the price i paid for the wheel / tyre package, with the price i would have paid for just the wheels alone, the tyres work out at £7 8O per 8O corner 8O.

I know the price of the tyres were subsidised, but have you ever heard of such cheap tyres before .

No Andrew...

At £7 a corner you could purchase 17 of these for the price of a single Dunlop Runflat :o 8O
