I thought I would start so that those who have an interest in Photography could discuss and swap tips. As I have noticed that there seems to be an increasing number of us with an interest

Perhaps a nice Mod out there could make it a sticky

Excellent idea. I have a Canon EOS350d and love taking photographs. Landscape and aircraft mainly. At airshows I can get through 2 gb worth of photos easily.

Interested to see what cameras others have.

The only thing I find with my digital SLR which I didn't find with my compact digital camera is that all my colours seem flat and need sharpening up in Adobe CS if I'm going to print them?? Any ideas??

I too have the 350D, I have a 75 - 300mm Lens that I had from an old APS SLR.

I am looking at getting an in between lens for Xmas, possibly a 28-200mm anyway got any recommendations

Today I got a Speedlite 430 Flash, ready for a little trip I have coming up at the end of the month (If the tickets turn up  )

Can't afford anything else at the moment but I do want a decent zoom lens for the aviation photography. The ones with a small f number and quality glass are very, very expensive. I've got a standard Canon 18 to 55mm lens and a Sigma 55 to 200 zoom. I've also got a Kenko 1.4x teleconvertor but the results are rubbish with it.
On full zoom with manual or auto focus, the subject is always blured round the edges with a huge amount of noise. I get the same when I use full zoom with the Sigma lens as well. Not good considering I bought the camera for photographing fast moving aircraft.

I'm at a loss really. I'm sure Matt will have an answer!!

Don't forget we need to multiply the focal length of lens with the size of the sensor (1.6) hence 200mm=320mm. That still baffles me

Good idea for a thread.

Here's a list of my gear,

Camera:
Canon EOS 10D

Lenses:
Canon 100-400 L F4.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon 75-300 F4.5-5.6 USM
Sigma 15-30 F3.5-4.5
Tamron 28-80 F3.5-5.6
Canon 2X Teleconverter

Flash :
Canon Speedlite 430EX

Along with Velbon tripod, monopod, Lowepro and Tamrac camera bags.

I also find that shots from my camera appear to be flat compared to one taken on a compact. Its due to the differences in software on each of the cameras. Compacts are aimed at the less creative users. SLR users are thought to be more creative and are more likely to "play" with their images, so although they look flat they are probably more life like. You can play with the settings on your camera to give the image more punch

I changed the setting over to Adobe RGB will that make a difference?

I also use the manual mode and play (mainly with still life or landscape) so I am learning. It's quite complicated really..

Why am I getting the blur in my images on full zoom? Is it literally the quality of the lens. I know for a fact it's not poor focusing because it's EVERY image (damn camera blah blah blah  )

I've not used the Adobe RGB settings so i'm not sure if it will make a difference or not.

Are you just getting blur when shooting fast moving aircraft or all the time? and what settings do you use for taking the shots?

The blurring at full zoom may be camera shake, just an idea

I used to work on CCTV systems and the more you zoom in the more noticeable it is. Hence why I have a couple of tripods one big and one small and a monopod, also if you have it set to a slow shutter speed as well

I am after a possible 28-200mm lens as I want to bridge the gap between my 18-55 and 75-300mm lenses, I have found when at Goodwood and other events where I am tring to take shots in an arena, that the 18-55mm is great close up but won't do the business the other side of the arena and the 75-300mm won't do the business when things are on your side of the arena  Plus you can't move as you have pinned your self in to a decent place  And you don't have the opportunity to swap lenses :o

So it is possibly down to Sigma or Canon.

Also what format do you guys shoot in I used to do JPEG but have been playing with RAW recently and am impressed, obviously for continuos shooting of motorsports I may have to switch back to JPEG though

I mainly use jpeg but have tried RAW it just takes sooooooooooo long to download and have have limited RAW software. I have the adobe CS Canon patch for RAW but you can only look at one image at a time. Everything costs money!!

I use RAW when I need to. Usually when I know the photos will need tweaking, like shooting at night or for something I don't want to get wrong.

Otherwise its Jpeg all the way! They write faster, take up less space and are more than adequate for most shots.

i only recently started using digital recenlty and found the flexability afforeded to me a great help as befoure i would oftem have ot carry 3 cameras with a differnt film speed in them but the iso set on the digital is a mass advantage but i found that the cameras atuo settings often made a meal of things so i will bying a sperate light meter as befoure i had to trust my judgement and tricks that i lerant for manual slrs no longer apply in the same way as they do to digital slrs

Yeh I agree with Matt on the RAW / JPEG issue, for fast write speeds ie motor sport JPEG are good. Recently I have been doing some sunsets/fireworks and shot with RAW & JPEG turned on and looking at the same picture side by side in RAW and JPEG there is quite a difference, however the RAW does allow you to tweak the picture more.

I use the program Digital Photo Professional, which came with the Camera and is availible for download from the Canon Support Section of their website, for processing the RAW images, it is free and has a few useful Batch Commands in it, for processing a quanitity of photos in a hurry

i'm such a nice mod......

ahem....

i almost bought a big camera then didn't as i instead bought something else.... (can't remember what now)

of course my freebie little camera takes adequate shots for what i like!

So you can now enjoy the celebrated ale that still eludes the Ferrets of the Gribble Inn - Fursty Ferret
