Hi all,

Sleepyhead's MX5 club are having a track day at Brandshatch on Monday 4th Dec. The cost for the day will be £99 with an open pit lane and using the short circuit.

At the moment this is open to the following clubs and friends. You will not find this track day listed on the web site since it is a club track day.

MRC, SXOC and MX5OC

Since we are friends of Sleepyhead we should be able to take a few of us along. Not sure if I will be taking my MINI on the track or just go in Sleepyheads mx5, depends on how much money I have come pay day.

If your interested please sign up here and I will provide more details.

2. Sleepyhead (Hoang - MX-5 Turbo)

Well me and Sleepyhead went to Brands Hatch on Monday and had a great time. Weather was excellent with blue skys and sunshine. Most of the cars where japanase tuned Silvia's and RX-7's. With a few MX-5's, evo, impreza, and a volvo estate. 8O

Morning started of as you would expect with driver breifing around 8.30am and a few laps behind the saftey car to learn the track. Sleepy then went out with the instructor to learn the track in more detail and pass on the tips to me later on.

After a short break to let the car cool down sleepy took me out to show me what he learned from the instructor. After our initial warm up lap something very unexpected happened to us that hot me and sleepy very worrid. On enter Graham Hill bend the engine shut it self down and we had a large amount of smoke coming out behind us. We managed to quickly pull of the track and wait for the marshals to help us.
Our first thought was we had blow the engine up. On returning to the pits one of the marshals came over and said the fluid/oil dripping from the car was a red colour and was most lilkly power steering fluid. So we opened the hood and found the pipe conecting the fluid to the pump had broke. This is what caused all the smoke and the ECU found something odd happening so killed the engine to be safe. Lucky for us the tuning company involved in doing the MX5 was about 30min away, so we managed to get the car there with no power steering and get a temp fix in place.

At around 1.40pm we where back at Brands and ready to give it another go. This time I went it for a drive incase it went again and all was fine. Brands Hatch is a really fun track. With it being a lot shorter than most you can really get into a good grove. Padack Hill is a really scary corner the first few time you do it. It is just like being on a rollercoster ride.

After my run Sleepy then went out to see if he was as quick as me. Being a passenger is really very scary as the whole ride seems faster when you are not in control. I'm pleased to see Sleepy has come along way since our last track day and is as quick as I am.

Once Sleepy had finished his run we deceided that was it for the mx-5 as we didn't want to risk braking the pump again. Since we still had about 1 hour left of track time we asked if we could switch cars to me MINI. Much to our surprise they said Yes. 8O I then had to empty everything out of my MINI (spare wheels, bags, tools, etc) to get it ready. Deceided to leave the road tyres on as we didn't have much time to change them.

Managed to get two runs in the MINI before it got too dark to run the track day. All I can say is I like driving the MX-5 but the MINI did seem more fun and very easy to drive. Had a good few runs against the Silvia's and the MX-5' which you will see in my video.

Will post up all the pics a bit later and find links to other peoples from the day.

For now you can see Sleepy driving his MX-5 here.

What John didn't show you in the video of the MK2.5 that is more or less stock that pulled away from John

It shows that power isn't everything and its down to driver commitment.

Don't tell them that.

I was quicker on the straights but he was more commited on the corners. Plus he didn't have to look after his tyres since I was on my road ones. 8O

Think if I get some cut slicks my MINI will be amazing.
