Dave.

I never let the dealer to wash my car anymore...

For starters they don't use the same products.

Probably get their trainees to clean them.

Plus too many horror stories about scratches appearing after a service. :roll:

Well you can use Meguires (see above - many swear by their products) .

Personally I find the Autoglym range of products very good indeed - carwash, wax and extra gloss protection (one coat of wax and 2 coats of extra gloss protection twice a year). Halfords is a good place to start.

The key thing is to wash your car by hand (that way if you have any dings or dents that could rust, or any loose plastic trim you can spot them and get things fixed).

Use warm soapy water and a good sponge, start with the roof then all the glass then the bonnet and front, the offside, then the nearside and finally the rear end (in that order - cleanest areas first finishing up with the dirtiest areas)

Only use abrasives (and nothing more abrasive that a pan scrubber) on the glass - never ever on the paintwork.

Then use a good quality chamois leather to dry the car off having hosed off the soapy residue.

If you use a pressure washer take care - these are usually much stronger jets than a jetwash - do not use the lance too close to the paint or dwell on a small area too long or you could damage the clear laquer coat on top of the paint.

Once you have waxed the car (see above), and taking particular care not to get any wax polish on any of your black plastic trim, I then treat the front and rear screens to a Rain-X treatment. I also use a Rain-X additive in my screenwash bottle. Only use Rain-X on glass that is 100% clean.

For the exterior plastic trim, wax-based products (like Back to Black or similar) are not recommended as the wax builds up in layers. Best stuff is the black plastic trim cleaner from your MINI dealer.

If you get car wax on your black trim you can remove it using toothpaste ( ) or peanut butter rubbed into the plastic with a damp cloth.

For wheels use warm soapy water, use and old sock on your hand (thanks Arron brilliant) no abrasives as the alloys are painted silver with a clear laquer coat (just like the bodywork) but you can use a strong detergent like flash liquid. I would avoid special wheel cleaning sprays or foams as some may damage the paint finish on the wheels.

To clean the inside and outside of the end of your exhaust, use a moist pan scrubber and the oven cleaner "Astonish" which works a treat.

For the tyres use any propriety tyre wax product.

To remove stickers easily from the exterior (or interior) of glass or paintwork use a girly hairdyer to gently heat the sticker, then peel off.

The main thing is that cleaning your car properly takes time and effort - but the end results can be spectacular

I'll post up some hints on keeping the interior clean when I can get around to it

Well I agree with some of the points Max has made - some of those housewife tips could be useful.

However I only ever use car products on my car, so for me thats no to baby wipes, vinegar etc.

I no longer recommend using sponges or chamois to anyone.

A good quality lambswool wash mitt and a microfibre drying towel preferably waffle weave with the tags removed is the way forward.

Sponges are the biggest contributor to swirls on your paintwork, they hold small particles of solids and as you rub it across your car it puts in fine hair like scratches - if you insist on using a sponge always use it in a horizontal movement and never round and round!

As for chamois cloths they pretty much remove any wax, or sealant you have added previously therefore making your paintwork dull after a wash.

If you have washed your car properly it should be shiny straight after a wash!

A full clean / detail should be;

1.) Rinse with a hose or jetwasher;

2.) Wash with a quality shampoo - don't use too much (too much
product will leave greasy looking smears)
Always use two buckets - One to wash and one to rinse (VERY
IMPORTANT)
Wheels first, then roof, glass and lastly bodywork moving around the
car in panels from top to bottom;
2a.) Dry with a MF towel (spray towel with quick detailer for a quick
shine);
3.) Clay if necessary to remove stuborn contaminants - Wash Again;
4.) Remove swirls and other defects.
4.) Polish (Panel by panel)
5.) Glaze - To Improve Shine;
6.) Seal to sustain shine and protect against UV, weather etc.
7.) Wax

These 7 points would take you approxiamately 6 - 8 hours. 8O

However the results if maintained will last 6 - 9 months!! 8O

Maintain with regular washes and quick detailing sprays inbetween washes.

Top up wax and sealant after washes as necessary.

Never used Meguiars but many people swear by their products so all those recommendations can't be wrong.

Personally never liked Autoglym on my Minis.

I presently use Poorboys World (most of their range);
Chemical Guys sealants and waxes - very deep wet shine;
Sonus - Their Paintwork Cleanser is fantastic as is their glass and chrome polish.

Poorboys & Sonus products are available on eBay through a couple of eBay shops.

Chemical Guys should be found with a quick Google search.

Ok well that's my 2pence worth.

I'll be doing a full detail probably this weekend so will try and get a few photos if anyone is interested?

Anyone want to give a demo My car really needs a good clean up and sorting out. Although the wax coat is still there so the rain runs straight off at the moment but looks a state!

love how my car looks for all of thirty seconds after its cleaned! i use the meguires stuff the shampoo and the wax, plus meguiers window cleaner. i then use holts chrome polish to do the silver bits and turlte washed black in a flash on the black bits obviously. inside its the black in a flash stuff to shine all the black inside. as well as a good hover, and meguiers window cleaner. frebreeze is good too. for any smells. lol. so all in all usually takes me 3/4 hrs to clean the car on every sunday morning. then stays lookin clean for bout 24hrs then looks rubbish again... lol
